  • My Blog

Welcome to my blog!   This blog showcases not only my work from many of the beautiful weddings I am privileged to photograph, but also reveals glimpses of my personality.    Here is an opportunity to share some great moments  as well as give clients,  guests and friends the chance to comment. I also hope prospective clients will be able to not only explore my photography and style, but will also find inspiring ideas, recommendations , and tips for their own wedding planning.   I myself got married five years ago and I remember how overwhelming it all was- especially picking the right photographer!  :-)

Abigail and Shai were married at Snug Harbour Botanical Gardens. I can understand why Abigail chose the venue. She has worked in the art world (something I immediately connect with and appreciate), interning at several well known museums such as the Met, El Museo del Barrio, the Tenement Museum and is pursuing her Master at the Institute of Fine Arts. Abigail wrote me that she is fascinated with “the emotional side of history- what people thought, how they lived, what they thought was beautiful, popular or not…” and so a wedding venue that boasts a Mind Dynasty inspired Chinese Scholar Garden as well as a Tuscan Garden, modeled after Villa Gamberaia in Florence, was a natural fit.

The inclement weather can never be allowed to dampen festivities. Thankfully, Abigail was very insistent that we would celebrate outside and not inside as the venue preferred. I identify well with that particular strong-willed character trait ;) At the end of the ceremony outdoors, it started to rain. I captured a moment below with my 2 expensive cameras hung around my neck and the thought of drenched and ruined equipment in the back of my mind. When I saw the Grandfather with the chair on his head, I clicked the button as fast as I could. I snapped without much time to think about composition because I knew a moment like this can disappear in a second or that the Grandfather would notice me clicking and than I can miss this frame. That is for me the art of wedding photography as it permanently captures something that is so fleeting it would not otherwise be remembered or even observed.

I always ask my couple to tell me how they met, and Abigail and Shai replied in a delightful manner, perhaps not fully realizing how sweet their reply was and how it reflects something special about their relationship. The broke their email into parts for clarity that kept switching back and forth and said “This is Shai writing” or “This is Abigail writing” as if they were now one and I would not otherwise be able to tell who was who without them being so explicit. Their story also reflects how sensitive and deep a person Shai is. What especially struck me was when he explained how he presented Abigail with a privately kept daily handwritten notebook from their dating. What an incredibly romantic thing to save!

So, in their words:

Abigail and I initially crossed paths at a Simchat Torah meal that I hosted — she walked all the way from Greenwich Village to the Upper West Side. And I was too busy with the meal to fully appreciate Abigail’s wit, wisdom, and charm. Two months later, I was a downtown event which, by sheer coincidence (or was it…?), Abigail also attended — and we finally had the opportunity to more appropriately meet.

The evening of our proposal we explored a crafts fair at Bryant Park (where I presented Abigail with a “fake” engagement ring purchased an hour prior and presented inside the actual engagement ring box), had dinner to prolong the suspense, and then returned to where we had one of our first dates. I privately kept a daily handwritten notebook as we dated and I presented the diary to Abigail — along with a few other personal gifts. The engagement ring was hidden inside a statue of the Eiffel Tower, celebrating Abigail’s background and a trip to meet her grandparents in Paris a month later.

Update: This was Abigail’s reactions after sending her a slideshow with the photos:
Hi Shira,

THIS LOOKS SOOOO AMAZING.

You are so talented, I have no words.  I was tearing up while watching.  Thank you so much for doing such an amazing job.

I was super excited to be invited to join the very prestigious Best of Wedding Photography list with some of my absolute favorite photographers on the review board. It’s an invitation-only membership site for the worlds top wedding photographers. Every invitation means that a photographer has been recognized by peers as being one of the best.

Erick Danzer, founder of the group wrote these kind words about my work:
I was just viewing your site again today. Your recently posted blog of Rekha and Ravi’s wedding is incredible – especially capturing all those brilliant colors! You consistently produce phenomenal imagery with a bold, modern, artistic style that sets you apart from the others in the field – exactly what we would love to showcase on Best of Wedding Photography. We would be greatly honored to count you among our members.

Membership comes only after the rigorous review process by the Jurors, including some of the best wedding photographers in the world: David Beckstead, Ben Chrisman, Del Sol Photography (Matt Adcock and Sol Tamargo), Glen Johnson, Anna Kuperberg, Crash Taylor, and David Ziser.

I’m SO EXCITED that three of my photos won in the Wedding Photo Journalists Association 2011 Q1 Contest. Thousands of wedding photographers from all over the world submit their photos to this contest, so it’s quite an honor to be selected in three categories! (Especially as second place for ceremony!) :)

Thanks to all my amazing couples for providing such beautiful moments to photograph. I was thrilled that the judges put so much thoughtful commentary and praise in their comments for each photo.

This a lovely email that I received from Luda, the bride in the creative portrait category above:

Dear Shira!

I’m absolutely ecstatic about this award! I want to congratulate you from the bottom of my heart! It is a honor to have our wedding to be captured by the industry leader and award winner!
From myself I want to add that I found your work soul touching from the first moment I saw it online and the WPJA award is an elegant confirmation of that!

It’s really the feedback that gives meaning to all the hard work. It’s one of the biggest rewards for me personally.

Angel Orensanz is one of NYC’s liveliest wedding venues. The interior is exquisite, and while the space is imbued with a spirituality and holiness befitting a Synagogue,  it is also permeated by a restless and  dynamic creativity that I find mirrors the personalities of the couples that choose, under its vaulted sanctuary, to get married there.

I first got to know Shiri and Lawrence at our engagement session.  Shiri is an impressive person, who carries herself with the  best qualities of intelligence and sensitivity- character traits which Lawrence also shares in abundance in addition to a fun filled spirit.  He always makes her laugh and we had so much fun together.  Sometimes, to be honest, my excited brides have to goad there less enthusiastic fiances into feeling the moment,  but Lawrence was extremely lively and loved the camera, making it so easy to capture their wonderful and deep connection.    They were also incredibly sweet, sending me a  gift afterwards of  a basket brimming with Repecharge Spa Products, a family business in a field that Shiri’s Mother pioneered.  I have to admit that after a full and strenuous wedding, I came back exhausted, and my appreciation for their thoughtful gift increased ten-fold, when I applied the amazingly therapautic foot cream to my battered feet.

Shiri and Lawrence met through a Sidduch (a well known and loved Jewish custom of matchmaking), and  must be eternally thankful to their friends Stephanie and Billy who set it all up. I found the story of how they were engaged to be delightfully honest as well.  For it was only three months after virtually living together that Shiri told Lawrence to move back to his old  apartment with the message that enough time had passed to decide if he was ready for the serious commitment of marriage.  One must applaud her courage and decisiveness, for her honest description of the emotional tumult of seeing his empty closet, as well as for her lightheartedness in declaring that she was so distressed she couldn’t even pick out coordinating outfits :)

Stark choices in life often precipitate stark realizations,  and it wasn’t soon after that Lawrence understood that he was not about to let Shiri get away.  So, he very quickly found himself  at Taboon, the Israeli restaurant, down on one knee.  Needless to say, he did momentarily infuriate Shiri , joking with a fake gum-ball machine quality diamond ring before revealing the real one, but in fairness she might have deserved at least that.   After all, it is a lot of work to pack AND unpack again all within a week.

I watched a video of Shiri and Lawrence’s engagement party filmed soon thereafter and in  her speech thanking everyone for coming, she said simply and beautifully: “My family are my friends and my friends are my family.”    I particularly loved when she said that, as that is the sense that pervaded the wedding from start to finish.  Yes, I was certainly touched by the deep connection of Shiri and her Mother, but even more than that,  Shiri’s phrase rang true- everyone who was there was truly there, not just as invited guests, but as close family gathered together to wholeheartedly embrace and joyously celebrate their union.
