Lauren found me through Dana Cavallero, her friend since childhood and another client of mine. I thought it is wonderful that two close friends can share weddings that are only a few weeks apart this October. The session was in fact a small bit of déjà vu for me because Lauren’s great energy was really similar to Dana’s and I could immediately see why they are friends.
We decided to take the engagement shoot in Tribeca next to where Lauren and Jeff live, at Brooklyn Bridge, as well as a few shots in the subway. It was the first session where I got to use some newly ordered equipment – a Litepanel Micro for enhanced illumination as well as a new Tilt-Shift Canon 45 mm lens.
I will be posting a separate entry on Tilt-Shift, but suffice it to say for now that it adds some cool blur to the images and gives me another tool for creativity.
As I have probably said many times, the camera peers deep into the relationship that couples share and that is no less true with Lauren and Jeff.
I love the shots of the subway, with the train whizzing past, and Lauren and Jeff locked in a timeless embrace. It really speaks to their relationship on the eve of their wedding, that they set themselves apart from the motion of the world around them. I also love the feeling of the station shots leaning against the iron subway pillars. Lauren and Jeff provide to the photos the warmth and intimacy that transforms the mundane and gritty subway station into an iconic and urban snapshot. And the picture of Jeff pressing Lauren against the heavy maroon brick wall captures not only passion, but is imbued with strength and support.
Lauren and Jeff had been friends for several years, sharing as close friends do, the stories of other relationships and people, and perhaps exploring in eachother’s confidences the reasons why none of them fit or felt right. However, one memorable night, at their now favorite bar, they opened their eyes and hearts to the fact they what they had been searching for was each other. After a year and a half, immersed in the enchanting beauty of Paris on a bridge that overlooked the Seine, Jeff seized that most perfectly romantic of all opportunities to propose. I will be very happy to shortly be a part of the ceremony that will consecrate that love.
