  • My Blog

Welcome to my blog!   This blog showcases not only my work from many of the beautiful weddings I am privileged to photograph, but also reveals glimpses of my personality.    Here is an opportunity to share some great moments  as well as give clients,  guests and friends the chance to comment. I also hope prospective clients will be able to not only explore my photography and style, but will also find inspiring ideas, recommendations , and tips for their own wedding planning.   I myself got married five years ago and I remember how overwhelming it all was- especially picking the right photographer!  :-)

I am super excited that Japanese wedding magazine, Anhelo featured a full spread of my work in their Bridal Fashion SNAP 80 issue. The spread showcases portraits of a few of my beautiful brides I’ve photographed in New York City. This is the second time that Anhelo has featured me, last year they published a beautiful spread of Kara & Matt’s gorgeous wedding.

Thank you, Anhelo again for the beautiful feature, and thanks to all my brides! I’m sure the brides who were featured are going to be ecstatic to be see themselves in your magazine! :)

I am super excited to have a winning photograph in the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers Fall 2012 contest!!! The winning image is from Sarina & Asaf’s wedding at Snug Harbor.

The ISPWP is an organization of the best wedding photographers in the world. It was created by professional photographers to raise the standards of the wedding photography profession, and I’m so proud to be a part of it!

Given that each year’s ISPWP contests have thousands of photographers submitting their work, their continued recognition of my work as some of the best in the world comes as quite an honor to me!

A Mid November Night’s Dream. That is perhaps how I envisioned Allison and Michael’s wedding. Much like Shakespeare’s play, famously celebrating a wedding amidst an enchanted forest, their wedding was thoughtfully crafted like theater. Act I started off with the ceremony in the majestic Church of Our Saviour on 38th and Park, which was originally designed, perhaps not coincidentally, by Paul C. Reilly who also planned several well known Manhattan theaters. Act II was at Gotham hall, which feels like a grand stage amidst Corinthian columns under a Roman dome. The were many  carefully considered details  in constructing a theatrical backdrop of a castle and forest, the theme for which drew on Allison’s childhood love of fairy tales and can be read in full here.

Allison was entitled to her fairy tale precisely because it was real. It was not the not the superficial infatuation of a young girl’s fantasy, but a recognition that a Prince Charming does not suddenly appear, but only emerges out of a deep connection over time, a growing admiration and appreciation, and a mutual commitment.  I am reminded of Shakespeare famous and beautiful words that “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind.”   If  one  takes that poetry to heart, as Allison and Mike have, they need not wake from their night’s dream.

Allison and Mike from ELECTRIC TWEED Productions

In Allison’s words, this is the story of how they met:

It was 10pm on a Wednesday night, and I had to get up early the next day. So, when my friend asked
me to join her and her boyfriend to meet up with a bunch of his old co-workers, I normally would have
declined. However, after my sister forced me to watch the movie “Yes Man”, I tried to adopt a similar
philosophy, so I went along.

Mike and I did not get off on the right foot, so to speak. I had crashed their “reunion” – one in which
girlfriends (let alone friends of girlfriends) were not invited. I probably came off pretty strongly, but
Mike quickly met my sarcasm with some of his own. Despite a shaky start, I was drawn to Mike, so
when he got up to leave early, I raced from the bar and cut him off at the pass. After just a few short
minutes of my charm, he suddenly didn’t feel so “tired” and asked me to get a drink in a more private
section of the bar. Before we knew it, we’d spent the next 5 hours discussing everything from his 12
siblings to our recently-drafted fantasy football teams. Always a gentleman, he walked me home.
Despite the fact that he was leaving for vacation the next day, he assured me that we would meet again,
and, sure enough, he called me the second he returned. Even though we were working long hours, we
always found time to see each other.

Soon after dating we found out Mike would be attending Harvard Business School that fall, which only
made our time together that much more precious. We continued to date long-distance, seeing each
other as often as possible. We always said that if we could make it through business school, we would
one day get engaged. In my mind, this meant that a proposal wasn’t likely before his graduation (in
May), so it came as a big surprise when our “Christmas dinner” turned into a scavenger hunt to all of the
places in NYC that were dear to our hearts.

It all started when I was getting ready at my apartment, only to notice that Mike had left. A note was
sitting on the table, and inside were the instructions that explained how the night was about to unfold.
A private car waited downstairs for me, and if I could guess the location to the first clue, the driver
would take me there. At each location (such as the bar where we met, our first “drinks date”, our first
dinner, our anniversary dinner, etc.) someone there had my next clue. Finally, at the last location,
Lincoln Center (where we had seen several shows, including The Nutcracker two years prior), Mike
waited behind the Christmas tree, got down on one knee, and whispered some of the sweetest words
he had ever said to me.

Samira and Jesse were married at Gotham Hall, the magnificent Classical Revival building at the intersection of Broadway and W. 36th Street in Midtown Manhattan. The grandeur of the building was complemented by a spectacular design and dramatic lighting. There is a sense of romance of entering a turn of the century ball, all of which serves as an unmistakable reminder that this is a unique and special celebration. The old inscriptions on the granite wall which beckon  passersby to invest for their future (since this was once the home of the Greenwich Savings Bank) suggests the metaphor that when entering this building to be married, that is exactly what one is still doing- making their single most important investment in each other.

The wedding was splendidly planned by Christine Godsey at Engaging Affairs. I cannot tell you how pleasurable it is to work with someone so experienced and meticulous. Christine was very sensitive not only to the needs of the Samira and Jesse, but to the vendors and particularly this photographer. That is very important- as a well run wedding really sets the stage for beautiful photography. You can read more about the way she planned Samira and Jesse’s wedding at this link: http://bridalbubbly.blogspot.com/2011/10/gotham-hall-in-all-of-its-glamour.html

Samira got ready at the Trump SoHo Hotel, at that charming intersection of Tribecca and the West Village, which affords breathtaking views of NYC from the windows. It really inspired me to use the skyline with the elements of the setting; the shoes, the rings. I love it when the elements all come together cohesively.

Since Samira and Jesse didn’t see each other before, it gave me a lot of time to take their individual portraits separately. I took Samira to Tribeca- and I think the urban, edgy feel was a nice contrast to the lavish Gotham Hall. It really matched my contemporary style of photography. Samira, in her stunning Vera Wang dress, gave it the feel of a fashion shoot.

This was an Afghani ceremony in which the bride and groom take their rightful place at the throne as though they are a King and Queen. The Bride and groom are then covered under a very decorated shawl. Traditionally, the groom will look at his Brides face in a mirror and will read a prayer from the Holy Quran. Historically, this would have been the first moment the bride and groom would have seen each-other in an arranged marriage. The shawl is lifted and the bride and groom feed each other “Maaleda” as the guests applaud. I was also mesmerized as always by the deep spiritual meaning of the Kheena ceremony, when a red colored dye is place on their hands. The rest of the evening was filled with Afghani music and dancing. The family and guests created a  huge circle and danced round and round in a circle to the beat of an ever increasing rhythm. There is such an energy to cultural weddings, and it is such a pleasure as a photographer; to be immersed in the joy and celebration and be inspired by all the fascinating visual elements.

Samira and Jesse rode off, immediately after the wedding, down the bleary late night lights of Broadway and to their honeymoon. I hope to surprise them with some photos while they are still away.

Update, I just received this beautiful and touching message from Samira when she saw the photos:

“Hi Shira – We just got back from our honeymoon a couple of hours ago and the first thing I did was run to the computer to see the pics from the wedding. We can’t stop looking at them! These pictures are so unbelievably AMAZING!!!!! You are a true artist!!!! I can’t wait to see the rest of the pictures. Love your work sooooo very much!!!! Thanks again for everything! You and your team are the BEST!”

Thank you so much Samira! :) You really touched my heart and put a huge smile on my face. I am soooooo glad the photos make you happy. :) It really means so much to me to receive such warm appreciation! It can be a lot of hard work – so the compliments and appreciation always keep me going strong.
