Barbara & David Married | Westhampton Beach

Barbara and David were married at Atlantica in Westhampton. They are a very impressive and accomplished couple.  Barbara is a second year surgical resident at St Lukes Roosevelt Hospital, a community hospital on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and endeavors to train as a cancer surgeon.  David is a pediatric cardiology fellow at Columbia Presbyterian.

For all fall weddings in NY, the weather can be  unpredictable and this is especially true for weddings out near the beach of course. Every bride would love dazzling sunny skies, and the evening before,  Barbara seemed very concerned that Mother Nature did not appear to be cooperating.

When I arrived on the morning of the wedding, events throughout the night, culminating with a bite from the family Beagle, didn’t help.   Needless to say, I gave Barbara a big hug and assured her (especially from the early travails of my own wedding day) that everything would be fine.  I also found out that her dog is on Prozac, just like one of my cats :)

A moment before they met each other for the first time, Barbara had told me all would be OK after she sees David, as he calms her down. Indeed, her face immediately lit up as soon as he appeared.  That instant serenity was a  beautiful contrast to the somewhat difficult start to the day.  I witnessed in that moment not only the love I see in many couple’s eyes, but a deep and abiding commitment to see each other through anything.

There are times I have to expend energy to make brides at ease, and after spending so much time on their hair and preparation, some are understandably resistant to anything that can ruin that perfection. But here was Barbara, braving the elements, sometimes barefoot, sometimes in flip-flops, having a great time and literally throwing caution to the rather strong winds.  I loved her for it!  All that she cared about, was not the sand or the cold, but only enjoying the moment with David.  (Well, almost all she cared about… she was a bit concerned I might get ticks lying in the sand to get the best shots :)  )  It turned out that we were blessed that the weather held up just enough for our portrait session on the beach to finish, before the real storm set in.

Below is a sneak-peak of some of her photos.

I also asked Barbara to send me in her own words the story of how she and David met (pigs feet and all :) )

“This is the story of how we met:

David and I met at Yale New Haven Hospital, when I was a third year medical student on my pediatric rotation and he had just started his pediatrics residency. One morning we were both at at pediatric morning conference (in July 2005). It was David’s second month of internship in New Haven- he was my friend’s resident and she told me about him. She thought he would be a good match for me. The next week we had a class on giving stitches using pigs feet from the supermarket- very romantic! We sat across from each other and talked/flirted the whole time, and I wasn’t paying close enough attention at the task at hand and accidentially stabbed another resident who was sitting next to me with my needle. That got his attention! We flirted a little, but then my friend told me he had a girlfriend so I gave up and stop going to the class. Then in September we ran into each other again in the hospital and he wanted me to take him to a Yale football game. That’s when we set up our first date.  It was four years ago. We went to a giant State Park. I packed a picnic and a blanket and we sat in the woods and talked for four hours.”
