Jean and Roy were married at the Thatched Cottage in Centerport. The portraits were shot at the historic Gold Coast-era mansion, The Vanderbilt, close by on the North Shore. It was an early morning start, since we were driving out from Manhattan to get there by about 7, but I was very excited about the day. After all, some of the greater family was flying in from Israel, and I knew that this wedding, despite my experiences with many cultures and traditions, would have a special familiarity. I had the rare opportunity to speak Hebrew and was very warmly received by all of the family.
Jean’s story below of how she and Roy met was especially touching to read. The devotion to each other, tested by time consuming careers, distance, and religious conversion, is remarkable. All I can say is that Roy must have been some cook! :)
“Roy and I met in medical school when Roy was a second year and I was a first year student. Roy asked me over for dinner for a first date. I expected pasta but was surprised by a five course meal! We have been in love ever since. Because of residency we were forced to live apart for 2 years while I lived in Upstate NY and Roy lived in Manhattan. When we were able to reunite in Manhattan where we are both finishing residency, I began my conversion to Judaism. We were engaged in October 2008 over the same meal Roy prepared for me on our first date 5 years earlier. I completed my conversion to Judaism in October 2009 and we were married in November. We went to Israel for our honeymoon so that I was able to meet the family that was unable to make it to the wedding and had a great time!”
